hubs vs. switches...

which is faster...

I currently have 3 computers sharing files and an adsl connection using a netgear DS104 hub. Would my adsl performance be improved at all if I used a switch instead?

The short answer is no, you would not see any improved performance by using a switch instead.

Using a switch instead of a hub will increase performance only if multiple hosts on your network are already using the full bandwidth capacity of your network.

Because the typical ADSL or cable connection is around 1.5Mbps, it is only a fraction of what even an older network is capable of. A 10Mbps network is entirely sufficient for ADSL or cable, with plenty of extra capacity, even though it would be considered obsolete against today's corporate LAN networks. 10Mbps is now considered old technology, most businesses today are using 100Mbps or switched 100Mbps.
