I disagree. Do you realize what a trivial recompile and clever marketing can do for these software companies? The release of a hardware upgrade is a major opportunity for these companies to sell more software and make more money.

I think you have to compare the pluses and minuses. Supporting a fragmented base of multiple targets outweighs the benefit that you mention, and that's why it is very rare to buy software that is optimized for 1 processor.

One advantage Itanium has in this regard is that there is no installed base, so the applications can be compiled to take advantage of every performance enhancing trick in the processor.

Regarding Willy, it will take years for this core to become a mainstream processor. I don't have any numbers handy, but I guess that it is only now that P6 is reaching > 50% penetration in installed base. (There is a good number of P5 Pentiums and computers from alternative vendors out there)
