August 28, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Japan's PC sales in July were up by 13.7 percent in units from the previous month and up by 45.1 percent compared with the same month last year. In value, the average retail price fell by 5,689 yen to 192,549 yen from June, according to GfK Japan Ltd. GfK Japan, an information service company that surveys about 3,200 consumer electrical appliance stores, also reported that the total number of PC units sold during the period from January through July 2000 rose by 72.1 percent on a year-on-year basis. As the result of brisk summer sales, unit-based PC sales rose two months in a row, but fell short of the record in March 2000. Sales have been constrained after the spring sales season due mainly to supply shortages of CD-R/RW drives and other parts. At an announcement meeting on Aug. 3, Masataka Kimura, secretary general of the Managing Committee on Personal Computer of the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association, said: "If there were no supply shortages of parts, the number of units shipped in July could have risen by about 10 percent to 15 percent. This situation is likely to continue until the end of the year," hinting that PC sales in July could have reached a record high. The total number of units sold this year surpassed the total of January-November 1999, and realized 93 percent of the total of January-December 1999. It should soon exceed the total unit-based sales for the whole of 1999. The total sales in value for the January-July period this year also exceeded those of January-October a year earlier.
