combjelly, Yes, there is less confrontation in some EU countrie, but France? is a hard case. The workers there are determined to ruin the country. There is so little new investment it is tragic. Even the government now makes new facilities with a predetermined life. This new lab will open in 2003 and close in 2013 or some such and they then make sure the employess know it. When the end comes it closes. When the workers try to get new government jobs the dead wood finds it has no job to go to.
It was so bad that some US companies were placed in the position of giving a job for life to employees, even after they closed the plant they had to pay the workers forever???
So they bit the bullet and exited France and let their physical plant get seized and sold...cheaper in the long run. Now they get contract workers. Engineers cannot work over their 30-40 hours, even if offered extra wages....no no. They must hire extra engineers. The Intel system of making their engineers work 80 hours/week will not fly in France at all. Is this good or bad? It lowers the countries bulk efficienecy, whcih shows as a devaluation on the franc, which shows as higher costs to french people for goods, now they have the euro and they place strain on the uniform exchange rate, and in effect drag it down. both france and Italy are very bad in fiscal management, deep deficits, year after year. no way to rein in the government workers. germany is better, Holland and the UK a lot better.
