Scumbria:<p> Sorry if I come accross as an hard ass, but I really do care about social issues. If current trends continue, I sincerely believe that in 30 years the working poor in the US will be better off than the upper middle class in some of these more progressive countries. Fx bubbles aside. I hate these types of discussions. In Europe, you don't see the kind of human misery visible in some areas of San Francisco. People are willing to pay to keep all aspects of the environment pleasant. Have you ever been to the North African slums in any big European city? (say Bruxelles?) For some reason, San Fransisco and Santa Monica have some of the highest consentrations of homeless people in the US.
