Hi Rudedog: AFCI uses Sunw servers and clients to manage their DSL POTs which control up to 250 separate DSL connections per box. I believe the servers can set the control parameters for each POT for several boxes in the network. SBC, WINSTAR, several CLECs, and even foreign phone companies utilizes the AFCI UMC1000 box, Sunw servers & client terminals running a Solaris network management control software.

The Sunw servers and network management software do not really do any telcom switching but rather it provides the administrator control over the POTs to turn on or off the customer DSL lines, test the lines, capture billing information, and meeter (and monitor) the usage.

This is the way I understand it and from what I learned at the Trade Show (DataCom 2000 ), Sunw's servers are used quite a bit as the control platform of choice for many of these broadband offerings.
