They are counting on IA64 strongly for that, as are the all the other major OEMs. <<< I think the major OEMS were counting on IA-64, but after 7 yrs of waiting, many (IBM, SUN, HWP), are deciding Itanic is not worth the wait. Especially after HWP and IBM said that VLIW would have problems. Even Intel says the follow up will be better next yr. Hardly the type of endorsement to make anyone want to ditch their current OS for IA-64. Thats the problem. The IT managers need a reason to switch, Itanic is falling short. <<<IBM's powerfour chip will eat Itanic for lunch; IBM has much more powerful chips today than Sun but they can't seem to market their way out of a paper bag vs. Sun. One of their top two server lines, Netfinity, is all PIIIs and Xeons. The industry loves standards and right now, industry standard Intel based servers are the fastest growing server line there is.<<<< I think it is interesting you don't dispute Powerfour will eat Itanic for lunch, but say IBM won't market them well. A premature statement right now, and a bit brash considering Intel's PR dept has taken a beating lately. How many more introductions like I820, I840, Rambus, 1ghz, 1.13 ghz launches can Intel sustain, and still remain credible. And the Intel Xeons , while a good buy right now, are also nearing EOL. Frankly, Intel needs a great P4 launch to restore credibility and keep the power it has in semis. Without it, Intels ability to pull off IA-64 will be severely weakened. Without it, Intel's decision to diversify may well be a necessity rather than an option.
