I think you miss the point. The debate format has become an institutionalized and important part of the presidential campaign experience. It allows the American people to get a good look at the candidates as they go head to head on the issues. The format is well-established, and has been since Nixon vs. Kennedy in '60.

For Bush to say now he'd rather debate on Larry King's show as opposed to the three scheduled debates in Boston, Charlotte and St. Louis ... well, that's a sign of weakness and isn't going to play too well with the American people.

I believe Gore has said, sure, let's debate on Larry King, too, but not at the expense of the scheduled debates in Boston, Charlotte and St. Louis.

I don't know what Bush is afraid of. Sure, Boston is Democratic, but the other two sites are in mostly Republican states.
