Coherent says to hold IPO for Lambda unit
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug 28 (Reuters) - Laser company Coherent Inc. said on Monday it planned to sell shares in its Lambda Physik AG subsidiary through an initial public offering on Germany's Neuer Market.

Coherent owns 80 percent of Lambda, a maker of high-power, pulsed ultraviolet and tunable laser sources. Following the IPO expected in September or October, Coherent will retain its majority position in Lambda with a 60 percent stake, the company said.

California-based Coherent will use proceeds from the stock offering to invest in new technology development, expansion and additional personnel for the expanding deep UV lithography part of Lambda's business.

Shares of Coherent ended Friday at 73-15/16 on the Nasdaq, off a year high of 107-3/8 but up from a low of 17-7/8.
