Japanese Volcano Erupts Again

Filed at 11:24 p.m. EDT

By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) -- A rumbling volcano on an island south of Tokyo erupted
again Tuesday, spewing gray ash five miles into the air and forcing residents
to stay inside. There were no reports of injuries.

Mount Oyama, a 2,686-foot volcano on Miyake island, erupted at 4:35 a.m.,
the Meteorological Agency said.

Because of reduced visibility from the falling ash, residents were urged to
stay indoors and refrain from driving.

On Aug. 18, Mount Oyama erupted with a five-mile column of ash mixed
with volcanic rock in its largest eruption since the volcano rumbled back to
life in early July.

About 2,000 people were temporarily evacuated to local shelters after that
eruption.

The 22-square-mile island, part of the Izu chain, along with some neighboring
islands have also been shaken recently by thousands of earthquakes.

More than one-fourth of the 4,000 residents have fled the island, most of
them seeking refuge in Tokyo.
