NTAP--Network Appliance and webwasher.com Announce Alliance to Improve Enterprise Privacy and Security Services
SUNNYVALE, Calif. & PADERBORN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2000--

iCAP-Enabled Application Delivers Increased Content-Filtering

Capabilities to Support Corporate Security Policies

Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP - news), the leading provider of networked storage data access and content management solutions, and webwasher.com AG, a leading global developer and marketer of advanced, enterprise-level ad filtering software, today announced plans to jointly develop value-added services utilizing the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (iCAP).

iCAP is an open protocol that enables communication between edge content devices, such as Web caches, and application servers that modify content for the edge content device. Companies that use these scalable, content-aware, intelligent applications will be able to create new revenue opportunities by delivering value-added services such as family-friendly online services and prioritized traffic management. These solutions are built primarily for large ISPs, online advertising networks, enterprise/corporate networks, portals, and Web sites.

Under the agreement, the companies will implement this standard protocol to integrate webwasher.com's content filtering and access control with Network Appliance network caching appliances. The iCAP-enabled application will provide a powerful tool for the stripping of Internet content -- primarily header and body tag -- to support a company's security policies. This application is ideal for enterprise businesses with heightened security guidelines, such as banks and insurance companies.

``The iCAP-enabled content filtering application developed with webwasher.com will not only better enable companies to address issues of security, but will do so in a simple, cost-effective manner,'' said Amit Pandey, director of NetCache marketing for Network Appliance. ``This value-added service from iCAP is another validation of the possibilities this open protocol can deliver for numerous vertical market segments.''

According to Martin Stecher, director of development, webwasher.com AG, ``This joint project with Network Appliance is consistent with our strategy to implement our core Internet content-filtering technology in new server-based applications to enable them to better address broad corporate concerns about security and productivity. As corporations grow increasingly concerned with issues like network security and privacy, enterprises are seeking sophisticated enterprise solutions that not only address these concerns, but do so with a plug-and-play solution. This new iCAP application via a Network Appliance(TM) caching solution will permit better stripping of unwanted Internet content and increase the efficiency of the NetCache(TM) device by suppressing unnecessary reloads.''

``In the banking industry, network security is always at the top of the priority list,'' said Thomas Zach, director of new technologies and system integration of HypoVereins Bank AG, Munich, Germany. ``The iCAP-enabled application from Network Appliance and webwasher.com is an ideal solution in that it not only enables us to meet or surpass our guidelines for security, but through its content-stripping capabilities, it reduces latency in retrieving Web content.''
