It's a miracle! CDMA managed to eke out almost exactly 100% YoY sub growth and also showed a sequential acceleration in the number of new subs (from 7m to a over 7.7m) Of course the numbers seem a little strange....

From June 1999 to June 2000, CDMA subscribers increased 96 percent reaching more than 23 million in North America, while the Asia Pacific region maintained its dominant position with 33 million. Latin America experienced the strongest growth by increasing 346 percent, followed by a 183 percent increase in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

CDG doesnt have the table with the new numbers up yet....but extrapolating from the March numbers, you can get a pretty good picture.

cdg.org

Total Increase
North America 23m 4.5m
Asia 33m 1.3m
Latin America 8.75m 2.23m
Europe/Africa 677,000 112,000

This seems a little strange....NA added 4.5m subs during the June quarter vs. only 2m in the March quarter. The 4.5m gain is even significantly better than the Christmas '99 quarter (3.6m). Also the percentage gain is listed as 96% for North America (am i reading this wrong?)....instead of the 113% that would be needed to reach 23m. The 4.5m new subs in NA is particuarly odd since just about every NA carrier showed a sequential decrease in the number of new subs added (except PCS). Verizon must have transitioned a huge number of subs from analog to digital....

I guess I will reserve final judgement until the CDG puts up the table listing the exact numbers....but FWIW I am generally sceptical of CDG's numbers. I would appreciate it if someone would check my numbers....am i missing something obvious?
