INTC abandoning IS-95 does have a downside element.

It says to the world "We don't think this MC-CDMA stuff is a very big market going forward, especially given that our competitor writes the rules, and we will concentrate on W-CDMA which has much greater potential and more than one rule-maker."

But it also says "we might find Qualcomm's ASIC business a very attractive acquisition."
