Well, it is for epilepsy and related conditions, so I imagine he was having periodic mild seizures, if he took it (the new book is very controversial). I will have to look up "jism" to see if I can find its etymology.......

I have not found the origins of jism in a cursory search. Perhaps I will search more extensively later, and let you know........
