The amount being paid for PowerTel, plus the inherently higher costs of GSM transmissions, particularly when used for data communications, means that this new network cannot be profitable if it charges rates similar to Sprint PCS or Verizon. The proposed acquisition reminds me a little of AT&T when it bought (and paid too much for) McCaw Cellular. I'm not saying the new networks won't succeed, but simply that if they are competitively priced, they won't be profitable. And if they are profitable, they won't be competitively priced.
