RE:"Maybe they will end up coming out with a 1.3GHz Willy. Wasn't that the original plan - 1.3 and 1.4GHz this year? They would easily sell more P4s if they did a 1.3GHz processor, but at 217 sq mm, would they be able to produce enough?"

Three problems...
1. They would get laughed at.
2. They run the risk of a 1.2 gig Athlon out performing it. Maybe even a 1.1 gig. or even a 1 gig coppermine.
3. They would have to drop the price.

Cirrus, <Maybe they will end up coming out with a 1.3GHz Willy. Wasn't that the original plan - 1.3 and 1.4GHz this year?>

If there are problems with Willamette, it won't be due to lack of GHz scalability. I'll bet Willamette still has a lot of room left for speed improvements before Northwood. This is very different from Coppermine which is being pushed to its limits and perhaps beyond.

By the way, Jim is right. For AMD, there could be a sizable window of opportunity between Pentium III and Pentium 4. That all depends on whether AMD is successful in moving the $300 sweet spot to around 1 GHz between now and Tualatin (mid-2001).
