Merrill to launch £200m green energy

MERRILL Lynch Asset Management is launching the first investment trust to
invest in alternative energy and energy technology companies.

The global trust, called New Energy Technology, is looking to raise £200m
and will be launched early next month. The new trust will invest in stocks
embracing fuel cell technology - which is expected ultimately to replace the
internal combustion engine - and companies focusing on renewable energy
sources such as solar and wind power.

MLAM, formerly Mercury Asset Management, believes that environmental
pressure, industry deregulation and advances in technology will boost the
energy sector which has been unpopular with investors recently. It says these
factors have already led to a surge in investment in alternative energy by
venture capitalists as well as the major oil, utility and automotive companies.

The trust will be run by Robin Batchelor, who is part of the company's
natural resources team. He will have access to specialised oil, gas and utility
teams based in the US. There are currently only 90 quoted companies that
focus on alternative energy, although MLAM expects 10 new issues in the
next year.
