<<NRG and Duke and Calpine are investing heavily in new technology ... they're not the pure plays but they're the end users of new tech and that will have some positive impact for companies that appeal to the more risk averse of us. >>

Excuse me? Surely you jest, am.

NRG has invested (past tense) in proven technology, i.e., electricity generation. They have real assets, managed by proven management, that are producing revenue attendant with attractive net margins in an attractive market.

Calpine is the energy industry's version of Amazon.com !! ("Trust us, we have something that might someday produce revenue - but ignore our tangled balance sheet for now!!" )

Duke is in another class altogether. (DUK is rivaled only by Enron in its space.)

There is no comparison to be made among NRG / Duke / Calpine. Do so at your own peril.
