In addition to the announcements, they will exhibit other advanced technologies including MEMS and arrayed waveguide at the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) in Denver, August 27-31 and the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Munich, September 4-7. Raman amplifiers and high-power, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are key elements of today's increasingly higher power fiberoptic systems. JDS Uniphase announced and will exhibit its Polarization Beam Combiner that allows higher powers to be achieved from less costly, more readily available, lower power lasers. JDS Uniphase also announced its new Gain Flattening Filter for use with Raman amplifiers and high-power EDFAs. In addition, JDS Uniphase will exhibit its high-power Attenuators at the NFOEC and ECOC. JDS Uniphase also announced its new Modulator Driver to complement its 10 Gb/s modulators. Featured and exhibited at NFOEC and ECOC will be its 40 Gb/s Pulse Modulator, which uses currently available 10 GHz electronics to achieve the higher data rates. Other leading edge technologies that will be exhibited include micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), which provide fiberoptic functionality on a silicon chip, and arrayed waveguides, which also offer size and manufacturing benefits for fiberoptics somewhat akin to what "solid state" technology offered for electronics. JDS Uniphase announced and will exhibit WaveSelect, the first integrated wavelength filter and photomonitoring diode for amplifiers used in fiberoptic telecommunication systems. This product has improved optical performance, a smaller footprint and saves costs for amplifier manufacturers when compared to using discrete components. JDS Uniphase also announced and will exhibit its new PDL Multimeter. It is the first such instrument to contain an internal PDL reference for verifying calibration, which saves time and reduces errors.
