It's kinda of long story:
As I understood it (some of this is 2nd hand) Sdram and DDR was developed under a joint partnership of DRAM Co's.
And the tech. was to be shared without royalities. Getting away from the TI days where everyone paid TI. Along comes RMBS with RDRAM and licenses for all. They said RMBS was all there was going to be.
Well guess what. They knew or found out better. (This is the 2nd hand info) So they went out and bought patents from others to enforce... They have no other revenue stream. No fabs. nada, zilch. Just patents that they didn't develop. Now the Lawyers come in and grab what they can. No one really wins here.
