hèrèmiste revisited

For the two of you who were paying attention, and the one of you who cares (but probably can't remember a day ago), I have received the direct-from-Paris (no kidding) thorough explanation of hèrèmiste.

It is, thankfully, not a rude term in the way I had feared it might be. The detailed explanation, complete with a little intercontinental rant:

"hèrèmiste" - that's what we might call "franco-français" humor (i.e. impossible for anyone non-French and not living in France to get). It is a phonetic transcription of "R. M. I-iste", in other words, someone who receives the RMI (revenue minimum d'insertion). The RMI is a small monthly welfare payment for the most desperate cases of unemployment and/or homelessness destined to help people get back to being working members of society. RMI was instituted under Mitterrand in about 1993. Some people contend that there is a lot of abuse (unmarried couples getting by without working, each one receiving the RMI for example). I see a heck of a lot less homeless and destitute people than in the US.
