Single vision? Dell? I think you have it confused with Sun.

As I recall the "vision" Dell started with was the sale of gray-market computers. I'm pretty sure that's no longer the "vision."

JMHO.

Mary - I agree that Pfeiffer was not at all technical. I invested pretty heavily in DELL's business model in 1997 partially because I was concerned about CPQ, and partly because I believed that DELL's model would pay off. Turns out that was a good move. But saying Pfeiffer kludged together a computer business is a little short of the mark. CPQ created and perfected the model for indirect distribution, just as DELL created the direct model 5 years later.

Just as CPQ was too slow to shift their business in 1996 and 1997, so DELL has been too slow to move theirs in 1999 and 2000. MSD's "single vision", clearly the best model for selling PCs may not be the best model for DELL in the future. Little about DELL's model excites me at the moment, unless you think that the PC business (as opposed to the computer business) is exciting - I don't. The "new" CPQ may well be on to a good model for the future - it is too early to tell.

My biggest investments in the last 6 months have been CIEN, JDSU and INTC, the first 2 because I like their business model, the third because the stock got put to me on an options trade...
