why would you put a geophone effectively parallel to the sill/dipping dike rather than simply employ surface O&G seismic and get a picture perpendicular or cross section to the deposit?

I am not a geophysicist, but I think it goes something like this: in a 3-D survey, a number of parallel lines of geophones are set out on surface. Second, assuming there is a velocity diference between the sound waves in granite versus kimberlite, having a geophone down a drill hole beside the kimberlite being mapped, helps pick the correct time interval to map when interpreting the data. Low angle faults could also give a velocity contrast, so knowing which velocity/time horizon is of interest is a big help.
