Gold becomes a currency in such a crisis, so it might actually cause an increase in supply when everything gets sold to obtain other currencies to buy food. Remember the Asian currency crisis resulted in the largest amount of scrap/recycled gold (almost 1000mt) getting dumped on the market in 1998.
