Compaq Strengthens EMEA Management
Team

MUNICH, Germany, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ -
news), a top global supplier of Internet infrastructure, access, services, and solutions, today
announced that Rob Walker, 48, is joining the company as vice president and chief operating officer
for Compaq Computer Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

In addition, the company announced that Werner Koepf, 58, currently vice president and general
manager of EMEA, will become chairman and chief executive officer of the operation. Walker, who
joins Compaq on Sept. 1, 2000, will have day-to-day management responsibilities for EMEA while
Koepf will concentrate on the strategic direction of the operation and the implementation of Compaq
Computer International GmbH in Zurich, Switzerland. Walker will be based in Zurich and report to
Koepf.

``With nearly 40 percent of Compaq's revenue generated in EMEA, there is significant senior
management focus on strengthening the operation,'' said Peter Blackmore, senior vice president, sales
and services. ``Over the last few months we've made a number of new hires and appointments
including new country managers in the United Kingdom and Ireland and France. Clearly, we are
entering a new era in our EMEA operations and I can think of no better team than Werner and Rob to
lead us.

``Rob has broad ranging experience directly relevant to Compaq's businesses and understands the
complexities of an organization that while global, is dedicated to serving the customer face-to-face
on the local level,'' Blackmore said. ``Werner's outstanding management skills will ensure that the
establishment of our new EMEA company is implemented flawlessly.''

Compaq is creating the new entity to handle Pan European accounts and to gain efficiencies through
central finance and information management systems. Current schedules call for the new
headquarters to open this fall.

``International customers and suppliers want to have one contact partner and one price,'' Blackmore
said. ``Our new EMEA company, working with our 28 offices around the region, will allow us to
move faster, and better be able to serve our European, Middle East and African customers.''

Along with developing EMEA's strategic business plan and managing the implementation of the new
Compaq Computer International organization, Koepf will also be responsible for marketing
communications, quality and customer satisfaction and the strategic aspects of EMEA's finance and
human resources operations. Reporting to Walker will be EMEA's country managers, Global
Business Unit managers and Global Accounts. He also will have responsibility for EMEA's
information management unit and the operational aspects for the finance and human resources units.

Walker comes to Compaq from Xerox Inc., where he last was the managing director for Xerox (UK)
Ltd. A 14-year veteran of the company he has served in various management positions in the United
Kingdom and the United States ranging from business development, to management systems and
quality, to general management of product development, sales and marketing operations.

Walker began his career at the Burroughs Corp., now UNISYS, where he held a number of sales
positions over his 13 years there. He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of
Lancaster.

Koepf has been with Compaq for more than six years, the last year as the vice president and general
manager of EMEA. Previously he spent four years as chairman and chief executive officer of
European Silicon Structures BV, and 22 years with Texas Instruments, where he became vice
president of the company's European Semiconductor Group and vice president of its International
Systems Division.

Koepf holds both an MSc in Economics from Munich University and an MSc in Electrical
Engineering from St. Poelten, Austria.
