Intel ships well over 30 million processors each quarter... My statement was a bit Paulesque, wasn't it? The fact remains that AMD waited to ship its 1.1 GHZ Athlon till it was ready. AMD hasn't yet shipped its DDR or MPU chipsets, and has taken considerable heat for that. They'd love to ship, or to claim to be shipping, those parts. But they aren't ready yet - so AMD won't ship them, or claim to be shipping them. Your comment that a number of people have damaged their AMD chips by smashing them with clamps designed to fit on different products has no bearing on this issue. That isn't a problem with AMD's chips. It's a problem with someone banging a square peg into a round hole. If someone jams a coppermine into a 486 socket and ruins it, is it Intel's error? Intel has had to recall its flagship (top speed range) processor this year. Its 820 motherboards, its quad processor server boards, and its RDRAM/MTH chipsets. Intel doesn't seem to give a hoot whether its products are stable before it ships them. And is willing to claim it can produce products it cannot produce (the numbers being mentioned for shipped 1.13GHZ processors are miniscule - and for how long has Intel claimed to have been shipping it?) There are already a dozen listings on pricewatch for AMD 1.1GHZ chips that AMD officially released for sale yesterday. Gateway was taking orders for immediate shipment before the official release, and so was one of the shopping networks. I've been annoyed with Intel's price/performance for awhile, but now I don't trust Intel quality or reliability either, and I think my reasons for doing so are obvious. I've been responsible for procurements of a large number of just released AMD products this year, and we've had no trouble with any of them. What if I'd bought an early 820 system, or early quad processor system, or 1.13GHZ system? I'm sorry if the post seems harsh, but Intel products cost noticably more than AMD products. And the AMD products have been pretty much flawless, while people paying a premium price for Intel because they trust the Intel name are regularly being shipped junk. Dan
