WIND--Wind River Delivers Multimedia, Graphics Solutions for Next-Generation, Connected, Smart Devices WindML 2.0 and Zinc 6.0 Ease Development of Multimedia Applications, Graphical User Interfaces, Shrink Time to Market
ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 29, 2000-- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced the WindML(TM) 2.0 multimedia framework and the Zinc(TM) 6.0 technology. The WindML product is a multimedia framework for graphics, audio, and video, with extensions specifically for the digital TV market. Zinc 6.0 technology expands the WindML framework to a full user interface (UI) toolkit and is designed to address the specific needs of graphics applications in extremely resource-constrained environments in industries as diverse as medical, gaming, and industrial automation.
As digital TV becomes more popular and applications such as point-of-sale terminals, gaming machines, and navigation systems develop into connected, smart devices, the role of graphical user interfaces (GUI) becomes key to their ease-of-use of and market adoption. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) use GUIs as differentiators and for branding purposes, which makes an easily customized look and feel essential. At the same time, OEMs must deliver increasingly complex products to market within ever shrinking market windows.
``As we move further into the Internet age and a proliferation of smart, connected devices, the challenges developers face only increase. They must deliver an application with more functionality, combined with an easy-to-use, attractive user interface, in record time,'' said John Fogelin, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Platforms business unit. ``As off-the-shelf solutions, the WindML multimedia framework and Zinc technology provide a valuable alternative to time consuming, in-house multimedia application and GUI development and help our customers focus on their core value add. These two products are great examples of what Wind River provides to customers -- proven, leading technology that enables customers to bring products to market more quickly and easily.''
``Tvia worked closely with Wind River to implement many of the Tvia CyberPro5000 streaming media processor features on WindML across multiple microprocessor platforms,'' said Jack Guedj, president of Tvia, Inc. (Nasdaq:TVIA - news). ``With its highly integrated circuit and complete software development kit support for TV, video, audio, graphics, text and animation, CyberPro5000 is the ideal companion for WindML OEMs designing Internet appliances, set-top boxes and digital TVs.''
``Wind River is the worldwide, premier supplier of software for embedded smart devices,'' said Doug Shaw, senior vice president, Agfa Monotype OEM Business. ``They understand that quality text and language localization is a valuable product differentiator. We are pleased that Wind River chose Agfa Monotype font technology for Zinc 6.0.''
Enabling multimedia support, easing graphics development
The WindML application leverages and improves upon Wind River's Universal Graphics Library (UGL). The WindML technology is a 2D graphics stack that includes APIs to support multimedia applications such as video and audio, making it easy for OEMs to support multimedia technologies in their products. It also provides 2D drawing primitives (lines, rectangles, and polygons), text primitives (fonts, with support for internationalization), overlay primitives (video overlays), alpha blending and basic windowing.
The Zinc application framework offers a solution for high-level C++ graphics development in extremely resource-constrained applications that require full windowing support. The new Zinc 6.0 technology extends the WindML product to a full-featured GUI toolkit by providing graphic objects such as windows, buttons, text boxes, list boxes, and images.
The Zinc technology also includes the Zinc Designer, a visual design tool which is integrated with the widely used Tornado® integrated development environment, to ease the development cycle and to facilitate rapid prototyping of the GUI. Developers can import custom objects and use them within Designer, to completely customize the look and feel of their GUI application. Examples and documentation for various GUIs, including a car navigation system, medical monitor, industrial control application, and a slot machine gaming application, show how to easily implement a customized look and feel. The Zinc application framework is available for both the VxWorks® and pSOS® real-time operating systems.
