Q's covering their own tush that they remain committed to
DSL, and accelerate deployments. NXTV (not surprisingly)
won't get the word about their relationship with Q until
September.

Seems to me that this could prove to be a case of the
messenger (Lehman's analyst) being partly right (Qwest will
focus on business), and partly wrong (NXTV sales are not in
danger).

US West's deployment of VDSL to do television probably had
it's roots in US West's foray into cable that was spun off as
Media One (since bought by AT&T). Qwest's focus however
is on fiber and copper, typically used not for TV, but phone
and Internet access. While TV via DSL is a great idea, Q
will probably rather expand on DSL for Q's traditional
products, rather than dive into "cable" ... yet. The focus
on business (Lehman is right) will let Q get DSL deployed
faster, and tap more aggressively the lucrative business
Internet market that can better fund the build out.

The beauty of an aggressive deployment of NXTV's equipment
is that Q can then easily come back to consumers in each
market, send out a "cable" sales force to offer this new "cable"
service, and they'll be able to take advantage of the >exact<
same CO equipment!!!

In this scenario NXTV would not lose business,
(Lehman is wrong) but instead would see a shift in the
product mix sold to Q. It could also explain the recent
slow down in sales to Q, while Q figures out what the more
appropriate product mix would be under their Internet-
centric plan as opposed to US West's cable-centric plan.

It's a scenario. And could well be wrong. I guess we'll
see in a week or two.
