"It is going to make data roaming agreements a nightmare???"

Good point, and a powerful potential for G*.

Ramsey, the days of costly brick phones may return in a version of some unwieldy data/cell phone type device. However, I submit that if they can't provide a cost competitive PDA/computer/cell phone device, many folks will opt to own a basic data/cell phone & take their compact PDA/PC when they will need to access data beyond simple text messages. etc. I would think that eventually PDA's & PC's will come equipped (or have an accessory) that eliminates the need for the cell phone when you are toting the PDA/PC around. And keep in mind, while the GSM cabal plays games, the CDMA world will not be standing still. They will create solutions & uses for their customers that will leave the GSM cabal further behind if they choose alternative routes to true 3G. How would you feel about paying ridiculous costs for an inferior system while you watch other countries with CDMA systems offer more for less?

I agree we may see subscriptions for high data rates that are pricey at first, but that will ensure slower adoption rates IMO. The costs of the infra & the spectrum will not be recouped in a slow growth enviorment me thinks.

I am certainly among the 'all you can eat' wireless internet crowd. I want freedom to access the internet anywhere, anytime. I will gladly pay a premium over a tetherd landline access, but not if it is priced so high that it overcomes the benefits of being untethered. I can choose to remain tethered. The GSM cabal cannot choose to not pay their bills.

Me thinks the cabal will need to choose a path to profitability (or at least reach a safe cash flow level) ASAP. Pushing out the debt to future periods will only exasperate their problems IMO.

Ramsey, it doesn't matter who is cunning enough to grab the profits from the spectrum shortage, the subscriber will still pay on the basis of demand for the spectrum. If it's in short supply, which it obviously is going to be, [that's why the auction prices were high], subscribers will pay the full whack anyway, even if governments give it away.

I don't get it that people don't get it that if governments give spectrum away, it won't make the minutes or megabytes one cent cheaper.

It seems as simple as 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

Okay, that will cut out a lot of people who have trouble with complex mathematics and Fourier Transforms, but the rest should get it. Here's the Piha Wave Function:

$1 for the inventor [that's Q!]
$1 for the government
$1 for the service provider

That's 3 bucks full! Which is what the subscriber has to pay to get a byte at the spectrum.

Full spectrum is as full as it can get. Three bucks full!!!

Any more expensive and people will use it less. Any cheaper and there won't be enough to go around and somebody will miss out.

Okay, once again:

Baa Baa Black Sheep
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir
THREE BUCKS FULL!!!

One for the Master [Ed: That's Q!]
One for the Dame [Ed: That's the government, totalitarian or not]
And One for the little boy who lived down the lane [Ed: That's Verizon, France Telecom or whoever].

Okay, so here's the test:

How much will a subscriber have to pay to get a mouthful of bytes [NO...NOT lamb or sheep]?
