Michael:

I live in an inner-city neighborhood that is making a comeback because rehabbers like me are spending money and time in fixing up old homes.

Twenty years ago my wife and I decided to stay in the city rather than flee to the suburbs, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I didn't want my kids to attend all-white, all-middle-class schools. I wanted them to learn to interact with people of all races and creeds. Our kids attended public school K through 12.

If you live in the suburbs and would welcome inner-city kids into the system, you are indeed in the minority, from what I've seen where I live.

I do agree that new, creative solutions are needed for inner-city schools. (See my previous post.) Public schools in many large cities are a disaster, mainly because of poverty, lack of family values and lack of role models for youth.

We need bold, fresh ideas for turning them around, not Bush's voucher system.
