I have tried this [cat] staring and get a different response...........They ignore me

Try it on a dog....Don't matter what you are thinking they become immediately uncomfortable........Will look back at you then look away......They seem aware that something is up and they are involved......

Cats IMO just don't seem to make the connection that the stare represents a potential interaction.......

Of course these cats and I had no relationship other than in passing so maybe with their owner they might behave differently....

Dogs are clearly different in that they have evolved to depend on one another and clearly they have a social structure which we have become a part of.

They respond to staring as you or I would.

Life is not necessary for a local decrease in entropy. Beautifully organized snowflake crystals form in a cloud of randomly moving water molecules. The water vapor itself rises against the pull of gravity. The entire evaporation/rain cycle moves huge amounts of water to the highlands, where it runs back into the sea. Mountains are pushed up against the pull of gravity. All of this is at the expense of the sun running down, but so is it in the case of life.

<< All that I'm saying is that there IS a layer beyond what we know. >>

There is far more that we don't know and understand, than what we do. We don't even know what constitutes most of the mass of the Universe. A finite Universe doesn't make sense, but neither does an infinite one.
