WASHINGTON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - GTSI Corp <GTSI.O> of Chantilly, Va, has been awarded an $857.2 mln U.S. defense contract for worldwide military government and communications work, the Defense Department said.

The Army announced earlier that IBM Global Services-Federal of Boulder, Colorado, a unit of IBM Corp <IBM.N>, had been awarded a companion $617.6 million contract to provide the same types of services for U.S. military and government agencies.

GTSI Shares Rise in After-Hours Trading on Military Contract

Chantilly, Virginia, Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- GTSI Corp. shares almost tripled in after-hours trading after the company received a contract from the U.S. Army initially valued at $75,000, the U.S. Defense Department said.

GTSI's shares rose as high as 10 after hours. They rose 13 cents to 3.38 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading.

The contract's value could reach as much as $857.2 million as part of a dual award to International Business Machines, the No. 1 computer company. GTSI and IBM will supply computer servers, software, operating systems and computer peripherals.
