I have a very fast online connection for my trading so I use 1 minute charts and play the moving averages ie. when the 10 minute MA crosses the 20 minute MA positively the stock is a buy, and when it crosses back negative then its a sell and possibly short. I also watch the 50 minute MA as well to help weed out the idiotic head-fakes. Hopefully a stock continues to run and I can then move to the 5 minute charts, then the 15 minute, 30 minute, etc. I have found this to be an almost infallible system - if a stock goes against you your loss is minimal if anything and you then play the other side. The only hassles are head-fakes, but by using the 50 period MA and only trading high volume, volatile stocks you can avoid them for the most part. You never get the high or low with this strategy but you always avoid that horrible death-spiral as I call it, when you have an offside position that keeps getting worse and there's no way to know what to do with it. Generally speaking the wins and losses are pretty even, but the wins are much bigger than the losses. This is the key to the market IMO, accepting that it is essentially a coin-flip process, nobody knows which way stocks are going to go, but by riding winners and dumping losers 50% is more than enough to make excellent money.
