Chic - come on, every TPC uses the best hardware the vendor can field, and that usually means running stuff in the pipeline both on the hardware and software side. The S80 benchmark was run on 10/29/99 with an availability date of 3/1/00 - how do you explain that in the light of your statements about current availability? Just as much of a "future product" when the test was run as the UE10000 you are carping about.

Your comments about the Sparc III is a lot more interesting - I am also surprised that those processors were not used, if there is really a launch planned any time in the next 6 months.

A few comments:

Sun's detractors resisted that argument when the shoe was on the other foot. Of course there's "leapfrogging" going on; what else is new? How is it fairer to make the comparison (as I think you did) of a much newer S80 benchmark with the previous old Sun top end benchmark?

Lead times for facilities, etc., being what they are, order it today and it'll be ready about when you are. I doubt anybody expects to order one today and take delivery next week.

I assumed some of the software was pre-release -- it's not necessarily Sun's hardware that controls the availability date.

Be careful what you ask for, because you might get it. A Serengetti vs. a refreshed S80? That's a benchmark I want to see!

All JMHO.
