So far many of the presentations we have seen have reinforced our major themes in optical components and systems including: the very early stage of this industry and the robust nature of demand for all products; the importance of next generation components — Raman, AWGs, higher data rate modulators, tunable lasers, etc; the capacity constrained nature of the sector; thus the importance of manufacturing capacity; the importance of ultra-long haul optics in future systems; and the need for more “all-optical” networking to lower costs. • But based on what we have heard we would like to discuss these three new themes along with their investment implications. These are not necessarily new from the conference but something we have been tracking a while and think now is the time to highlight them. • 10 Gigabit Ethernet should be huge. We see a lot of momentum emerging from this new technology even though it is still in its infancy. Basically we think that 10 GigE could be the first standard that can be applied to both LAN and WAN interfaces and it may also be the first WAN standard to be applied in both North America as well as the rest of the world. Equipment companies that adopt this standard early should gain an advantage. So far we have seen strong interest from Finisar (FNSR, D-2-1-9, US$42.50) and Stratos Lightwave (STLW, D-2-1-9, US$42.50) on the component side and Nortel (NT, B-1-1-7, US$81 3/8) and Ciena (CIEN, Rvw, $210) on the system side.
