Actually, I think we need to expand the role of the federal government. The pendulum has swung too much in the other direction. I am not one who believes that less government is better government.

I think the federal government should increase its role in the following areas:

1. Environmental concerns. As much as Gore is castigated over environmental issues, global warming is a very serious issue. So is the increasing suburbanization of America. Thousands of acres of land are being eaten up every day as the suburbs grow and grow and grow. Let's focus more on rebuilding our cities. And also, don't overlook our small towns. How can we rebuild those downtowns that have gone under because of the "Wal-mart effect"?

2. The policing of white-collar crime: SEC violations and the such.

3. Education. Create federal education "SWAT" teams to go into troubled school districts and lend a hand to pump new life into forsaken schools.

These are just three that I thought of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are other areas.
