Semis and semi equips seem to be taking a breather today. Given that, you could say ALSC is doing relatively well. But with the reiterated Strong Buy from Needham, the ALSC stock performance seems lukewarm. Perhaps Needham felt they needed to give the stock some support in light of the Tower Semi news announcement.

The TSEM announcement looks like a positive investment for ALSC. It's always nice to have government grants to help finance fab construction. It should give ALSC access to some useful technology while expanding their production capacity. It also helps diversify ALSC's production away from the geologically and politically vulnerable Taiwan (though I wouldn't say Israel is without its own risks). I see it as a further commitment toward long term development of ALSC's chip business through partnership investments. The risk is that it may not look so sparkly if semis go into a big downturn in 2002 when the new fab is scheduled to begin production.

The Taiwan stock market continues to look weak. It looks like that may be holding up the UMC IPO.

The price at the close today was 25 7/8. From the current stock and investment portfolio, that price accurately represents their asset value (after taxes).
