GSM got to India first so it is still dominant. But numbers are still tiny compared to rest of the world.

I have seen a lot of announncements of small CDMA/WLL installations. LG and Samsung are both active in promoting CDMA in India.

I think I finally believe that the US wireless market has taken off. Take a look at these numbers from the CTIA website.

Total Subs Increase %gain
Jun '97 48.7m 4.7m 10.7%
Dec '97 55.3m 6.6m 13.6%
Jun '98 60.8m 5.5m 9.9%
Dec '98 69.2m 8.4m 13.8%
Jun '99 76.2m 7.0m 10.1%
Dec '99 86.0m 9.8m 12.9%

The overall numbers have been relatively consistent....the June quarter has shown somewhere around 10.2% growth and the December quarter has averaged around 13.5%.

That's finally changed....CTIA shows that the US reached it's 100 millionth sub on July 26th. They state that the US is adding around 67 thousand subs a day. So backtracking I come up with around 98.2m at the end of June. This would represent a 14% increase during the June quarter.

In addition, the CTIA estimated that on April 10th there were 90.7m wireless subs.

This means that the first quarter showed 5.5% growth (4.7m subs) while the second showed 8.3% (7.5m subs).

It is tough for me to find confirmation of this acceleration QoQ in the various carrier numbers. However, the above numbers do match up with what the CDG posted. If the acceleration continues we should see an overall 35% growth rate (30m subs) for the year. All of this should be good news for Qualcomm....and will hopefully cushion the decline in Korea.
