Re: A few years ago, when I bought a quality used car (in cash) from a car dealer that my family knows personally, he asked if "everything is going all right with my job", in a tone that seemed to question why I was "going downscale". Americans are so class-conscious that it is sometimes painful to watch the slick commercials on T.V.

yup, I get the same crap. I drive a 91 accord, 170K miles. Apparently, I deserve better for myself. Like a nice new beemer with a big loan, since I can qualify now. -ggg- That's the American lifestyle now, find out how much credit they'll give you, then max it out.

You are so right, O. Most, well many, of the cars in our parking lot cost more than the average house in the US. Bot a Corolla 3-yrs ago for my oldest son to drive and now than he's away at college, I get really bizarre looks driving a little Toyota. Town is full of Porsches, Beemers, and monster-sized SUV's. Since so many women in town don't work and have nannies to take care of their kids, I can't for the life of me figure our why so many of them drive huge tanks. And don't get me started on the ones that are doing so while chatting on the phone. UFB
