Well, that's kind of tough, because you can't trademark the word 'Palm'.

Actually, my understanding is that you can trademark "Palm," and that Palm has done it. They have extensive language in some of their documents, detailing the specific terminology that needs to be used regarding their product so that they can maintain the "Palm" trademark.

A few years ago they successfully defended their trademarked position by going after MS when it tried to use the term "Palm" in its product ("Palm PC," I believe it was). Anyway, Microsoft backed off. That's why MS is using "pocket" instead of "palm" in its product name.

If 'palm' is synonymous with handheld computing, will it appear in the dictionary as a lowercase noun or verb meaning handheld computer, ala xerox?

Good question. I don't know, but my impression is that they don't seem intent on losing their trademark position.

El Guapo/cfoe/Mark:

Kind of OT:

We haven't reached the masses yet:

(1) My broker's teen daughter, who apparently alternates her free time between her cell phone and her PC based AOL IM "buddy list", has never heard of Palm. Now there's a market for the taking. Roll on the $50 Palm connectivity kit before Xmas, and M100's for sale in Gap!

(2) My wife e-mailed her university faculty with the Q "Should we get Palms to improve our productivity and communications"? One response was "I already have two palms on the end of my arms. What would I do with a third?"
