They lied. Companies do that when they're in a pinch.

Hm. I will admit that your logic is somewhat sound here. The deep pipeline and the penalties associated with that bring up really big warning lights everywhere that I look.

Aargh. I'm trying to be a Devil's Advocate here, but you're making it really hard by making sense. :P

Okay. How about AMD in the 12 months before the Athlon came out in August, 1999? No, how about AMD in the 48 months before the Athlon came out? While I personally believe that their actions (putting themselves into stupid amounts of debt to push out the K7 core and pull in Dresden, while pushing their current core well beyond its capacity to stay alive during those impossibly difficult times) were very much correct for the time, they most certainly had the appearance of falling flat on their face on a consistent basis, much like Intel is having now. The last minute delay of the K7 (from "H1" to August) and the prerelease scores didn't help this image.

Scumbria,

Intel's management said several months ago that they could launch P4 "anytime they wanted to".

To be fair, I think it was Asshook Kumar who said that.
