There are thousands of apologists that attempt to justify this story by making it figurative, or by making it an angel rather than God. However, the bible goes to extreme lengths to emphasize that it is, indeed, God:

Jacob says, "I have seen God". Not only has he seen God, but he has seen him in the most dreaded manner possible, "FACE to FACE". He then says that, "my life is preserved". His astonishment at this fact is additional evidence that it was God. Finally, the place gets the name of Peniel (FACE OF GOD). Absolutely no doubt. It was GOD.

During my high school years I wrestled competitively, and I know a little bit about the energy that it entails. Our matches generally did not last more than 2 or 3 minutes. By that time both winner and loser would be trembling with fatigue. Truly grappling with all ones strength for even 10 minutes would be one hell of an accomplishment. One must admire both God and Jacob, for the superhuman effort which an all night match would require. One is surprised that it was God that was forced to cheat. Jacob was mainly known for his cunning, deceit, and greed...but everyone meets their master at some point. Jacob negotiates the terms, however, just as he did earlier when he set conditions upon God, if he was going to worship Him as Lord.

Nowadays, I'm sure that kind of behaviour would be considered heretical.
