Rambus to pursue Hyundai for patent violations
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug 30 (Reuters) - Microchip technology provider Rambus Inc. (NasdaqNM:RMBS - news) on Wednesday said it plans to contest claims by Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. Ltd. that the South Korean company does not owe Rambus royalties for the use of its technology.
Rambus said had initiated negotiations with Hyundai to license Rambus' technology for certain microchips, but Hyundai abruptly cut off further discussion with the start of litigation.

Hyundai announced on Wednesday its filing in a U.S. district court in San Jose, Calif., of a lawsuit seeking to disprove Rambus' assertions that Hyundai is infringing on its patents and must pay royalties for the use of its technology.

``We think their patents are invalid and unenforceable,'' said Farhad Tabrizi, Hyundai Electronics vice president, adding that the suit seeks a declaratory judgment for non-infringement.

Rambus said it is preparing a response to Hyundai's allegations and expects to prevail in the litigation and be fairly compensated for the use of its intellectual property.

Rambus is an intellectual property company that designs, but does not build, memory chips. Rambus shares were down $3-13/16 at $76-13/16 on Nasdaq.
