MultiMediaCard and applications for digital communications devices include:

[from: SanDisk]

***The entire phone book of a major city or a company directory can be loaded on a MultiMediaCard.

*** Today, news headlines can be transmitted to a mobile phone or pager several times a day. For those who want or need to see the complete text of stories, those stories can be downloaded to the MultiMediaCard.

***Since smart phones will have built in Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), they can also act as digital music players so consumers will be able to play downloaded music from their MultiMediaCard.

***Stock quotes often are sent to mobile phones and pagers via various services. But that is usually all that the phone owners can get today because of storage limitations in their phones. The MultiMediaCard will allow them to get complete news stories and business reports that will give them a better understanding of stock movements. Financial information on the top 5,000 trading companies can readily be stored on the MultiMediaCard.

***Today, many mobile phone users have a "virtual" mailbox that they can dial into to get messages. But they pay for the air time with each message they retrieve. Soon the messages will be downloaded in a compressed file for later retrieval at a considerable cost savings to the owner as there is no air time charge for accessing the card.

***Maps, photos, charts, dictionaries and similar material can be sent to mobile phones and pagers equipped with a MultiMediaCard where they can be viewed on the screens of the devices. It is expected that MultiMediaCards with maps for various cities will be developed and sold.
The Official Airline Guide can be stored on a 8MB MultiMediaCard, and changes can be downloaded each week or even daily.

***In the near future, mobile phone users will be able to access web sites and download their favorite songs to a MultiMediaCard. A 64MB MultiMediaCard, for example, can store about one hour of near-CD quality music.

***Phone features, such as call waiting and call forwarding, will be added to mobile phones with a MultiMediaCard. Future phones will incorporate voice recognition features, with a MultiMediaCard storing a personalized vocabulary.

***A MultiMediaCard will allow a mobile phone to function as a voice recorder. Directions to an address, for example, could be recorded to a MultiMediaCard-equipped phone during the conversation. The directions are stored on the MultiMediaCard and the phone user then conveniently listens to the instructions as he or she drives to the site.
