Please explain to me why the opinions of non-voting, non-citizens should be relevant to discussion of US elective politics?? JLA

BTW, I have NEVER characterized myself as a compassionate conservative.

This issue of permanent residents and h-1 visas are where the republican policies are most at odds, I would say. On the one hand you have them kowtowing to business to "open the floodgates" and let in as many h1-b visa workers as business wants. Otoh doing that means multiculturalism is a given in the high-tech centers and that means religious and cultural tolerance, which they don't have.

flapjack,

I have read the exchange. As far as compassionate conservatism is concerned, I think it is a gimmick. If Bush is scared to be a conservative, that's his problem. As for the foreigner, when he becomes a citizen, he gets to vote, what's the difference? As far as his opinion, where does he come from, and what does he compare it to? What does he know about US history? Did he learn from a biased education system? I use he not knowing the gender of the poster. I do believe his opinion is fairly irrelevant without knowing what it is based on.knc

I have been busy, so I am just getting to this. JLA was responding normally to Murali until a broad opinion of Clinton was expressed. Then he made what I would consider a somewhat hyperbolic statement, with a grain of truth. It is not Murali's business in the same sense that it is the business of the citizenry. I would not have spoken so harshly, and if Murali is pursuing citizenship, perhaps his interest is greater than jla acknowledged. But there are sometimes matters of delicacy where it is hard to bear the opinions of people who do not have a stake in the matter, and I think that is the reaction jla was having.......
