But hey, if worse comes to worse and Pentium 4 performance is indeed abysmal, at least Itanium will look that much better in comparison. I'm still very worried about Willamette and Foster overshadowing Itanium, at least in a few areas.

At this point, with Merced pushed to Q1 2001 and with McKinnley scheduled for Q3 2001, wouldn't it make sense to just scrap Merced? Instead of calling it a product, why to not continue to call it a pilot and sell it very cheaply to developers / OEMs in order to build support for McKinnley?

I think the market for Merced is very different from the market of the original Celeron (that also suffered from humiliating performance). In Celeron market, the follow up Celeron A was able to quickly erase the initial bad impression.
