Tony,

re: lack of focus, critical thinking etc.

Look you guys keep blaming AMD droids.

The fact is that Intels newest chip the Pentium IV has several strikes against it:

1. It is lumbered with DUAL rambus channels.

Non rambus support is 1 YEAR AWAY!!!

After all the rambus fiasco's how does any rational manager bet their new product and desktop on a problematic technology. This NOT an engineering screw up. This IS A CLEAR FAILURE OF HIGHEST LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT not having a back up plan.

2. LACK OF LEADING EDGE CAPACITY

Something STINKS at INTEL's fabs.

They allegedly have MANY 0.18 FABS.

PIII and celery's have a die size of < 100mm2.

They MUST YIELD > 200 Good DPW.

At 30M pcs/qtr that translates to only 150,000 wafers/qtr or only <40K wafers/mo. Megafabs do 20K wafers/mo.

Something went VERY WRONG with Intels fab/production etc and this is continuing.

THIS IS A CLEAR MANAGEMENT problem.

3. Paper launches

Intel launched a processor 30 days ago. And only about 10K units were shipped per Intels NO 1 ANALYST (asshok).

On 10M units/mo that translates to introducing a product that yields approx at 0.1%.

This is a CLEAR management FIASCO because the descision was made by senior management.

Problems happen all the time but Intels MAJOR screwups have been MANAGEMENT inflicted.

And willy release is 30-45 days away.

Early indications are:

1: HUGE die size 215 mm2.
2. Lousy performance - 20-30% slower in IPC than PIII.
3. DUAL RAmbus channels for double pricing.

Now perhaps all the info above is all WRONG and PIV will be great.

But Barret needs to stop gallivanting around being a PR person and actually start actively MANAGING the company.
I wonder when the last time he rolled his sleeves up and went to the lab and actually talked directly to the engineers and first level managers. My suspicion is NEVER.

And i recall that grove et al used to have open office where anybody could come over and talk.

The culture has inevitably changed but some of the old baseball bat, open office approach may be called for.

regards,

Kash Johal
