RE: rush by Cisco to begin chasing photons in earnest... You very soon will see CSCO chasing wireless 'con gusto'. Just watch.

Frank,

Still I'm a little confused by your comments. The old world infrastructure represents the fertile ground for Cisco - if in fact Cisco can execute. To execute it means describing in clear terms what is different/better about Cisco's IP based solutions versus that of traditional circuit based infrastructures. So I dont really see any symbiosis other than the fact that the current infrastructure is Cisco's new targeted markets.

As for optics - I don't believe this is the real short term threat to Cisco that many percieve it to be. Optics is indeed a way of moving packets but it occurs at very low layers (layer 1 and going forward layer 2). The game today is about services and service delivery and THAT is where Cisco appears to be focused. Transport is not and has not been a big focus for Cisco recently and in reality longer term will be commoditized - even in the optical domain.

BTW - FWIW I was around in 87... and well before. ;)

Frank,

Here's something I just ran across...

redherring.com

They don't do a really great job of describing services but it's heading in the right direction....
