Shanghai Aims to be Among World's Most Wired Cities
August 31, 2000 (BEIJING) -- Shanghai intends to join New York, London, Tokyo and Paris as one of the world's most wired cities in the next decade, if the city's info-tech drive pays off.

The plan is that daily life, business, education, health care and many other areas of urban living will be connected to the Internet by 2010. This will strengthen the city's global competitive edge, according to a recent report.

To achieve its goal of joining the world's most wired cities, Shanghai's municipal government has unveiled a three-year plan, running through 2003. The plan focuses on the development of electronic infrastructures by connecting homes to the Internet, encouraging e-businesses and putting government operations online.

According to the plan, more than half of Shanghai's residential communities will be wired for online shopping, news, distance learning and medical services by the end of 2002.

The information-technology sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 20 percent in the next couple of years, which will make it Shanghai's most important industry.

All large-scale enterprises in Shanghai and more than 80 percent of small and midsize businesses are being encouraged to computerize their operations in the next two years.
