I learned the same thing in martial arts when I was a kid.

First thing I was taught, and I still remember it..

It went like this..

before you learn Karate..a punch is just a punch...(meaning you are unskilled so it is just thrown out without knowledge)

Then, when you start learning the art, a punch becomes more than a punch (meaning, now that you have some of the skils down pat, you have to think when you punch, but you know what the end result will be)

Later, when you have achieved black belt, the skill is internalized and you automatically perform the right punch, without thinking....your body instinctivly does the move...

So..

A punch is just a punch....again...
